Irma: We Can’t Beat Her So Maybe We Should Join Her

I turned on the news this morning just long enough to determine that there is no news other than Irma…and to conclude that I don’t like Clayton’s replacement.

Irma seems determined to wreak havoc somewhere, or more likely everywhere in Florida and once again we are brought to our knees in the face of a power far greater than the government.

So this is all I can add to everyone’s hurricane preparation check list:

hurricane2Hurricane Cocktail

There are apparently a million recipes for  Hurricanes. Some are blue, some contain odd ingredients like Galliano and Blue CuraƧao and fruit juices ranging from passion fruit to orange, pineapple and I even saw one recipe that called for Hawaiian Punch – do they even make that anymore?

how about a nice hawaiian punch

As a result of the many various ingredients Hurricanes (the drink) come in every color of the rainbow - red, orange, pink, and blue. But the classic (and best) is a rather unimpressive muddy brown served straight up rather than in the Mardi Gras style hurricane glass above, made famous at Pat O’Brian’s in New Orleans.

classic hurricane

2 oz dark rum
1 oz passion fruit syrup
1 oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in a shaker over ice. Shake and strain into an ice-filled glass. (The original recipe calls for crushed ice, but I prefer this with cubed, since the drink doesn't get diluted as quickly.) Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

Prayers for all of the MOTI in harms way. Take cover, keep your oil lanterns burning, and report in as soon as you can.

Be safe my friends.

FLOTUS Friday–Hurricane Edition

Let’s be honest, ‘best’ of anything lists are never more than popularity contests. So who was surprised that Vanity Fair’s ‘Best Dressed’ list included former FLOTUS Michelle but shunned current FLOTUS Melania. President Trump – and by extension his wife – remain unpopular with extreme prejudice in the Deep State Media.  But perhaps Business Insider, in another snarky article comparing the cost of Melania’s outfits to those of Michelle’s, reveals a partial explanation of their unpopularity: not only are the Trumps wealthy, they don’t have the good sense to be embarrassed by it.

Melania and her husband have long embodied a more gold-plated, luxe version of the American dream than the Obamas.

It's a version of opulence that repulses many, especially progressives.

Of course in the comparison of the two FLOTUSes Business Insider fails to note one obvious distinction: Melania could afford to wear any damn thing she chose long before her husband decided to run for president.

So in summary, the reason Melania Trump is not on Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed list is simple: jealousy, with a side order of virtue signaling. I can certainly think of no other reason anyone would consider this exemplary of ‘best’ of anything let alone ‘dressed’ -

As you know, I could go on…and on; but I won’t. You’re welcome. Let me just say I can’t see how under any legitimate metric Michelle could possibly rank higher than someone who looks like this when she’s “dressing down”

Oh, and a quick post note: it looks like President Trump was right again when he tweeted this last December:

trump variety gradon

According to Politico Graydon is calling it quits. Pity, he’s the only person I can think of that could give PDJT a run for the #1 spot on the ‘funkiest hair’ list. On second thought, it’s not really a contest:

What gives this dufus the right to criticize anyone for anything? Oh, that’s right: money, and the power of the press.

Resist We Much!

TO the States or any one of them, or any city of the States, Resist
much, obey little,

Once unquestioning obedience, once fully enslaved,

Once fully enslaved, no nation, state, city of this earth, ever after-
ward resumes its liberty. – Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

It is funny that the Left is only infatuated with ‘resistance’ when they are not in power. Then resistance is a beautiful thing, no matter how ugly it gets.

antifaantifa philadelphia

When they are in power resistance is, of course, racist:

tea party extemiststea party racist sign

While the Tea Party was a grass-roots group with no funding and no formal leadership, Antifa is all too well-funded and has altogether too many leaders:

For the most part, the Resistance leadership is not the modern version of a group of grass-roots idealistic outsiders living hand-to-mouth between missions in the scrub. Their announced leaders, such as Hillary Clinton, are often the embodiment of the status quo rich, influential, and elite America. The Resistance sees nothing incompatible in attacking Trump while working out of a townhouse in Georgetown, living in a Malibu compound, flying in a private jet, making a quarter-million a year as a university-endowed professor or a Southern Poverty Law Center grandee, or being a life-time Washington fixture or corporate CEO.  - Victor Davis Hanson

As usual, Mr. Hanson nails the situation to the church door:

There is a populist and growing resistance to the Orwellian idea that free speech is hate speech, that equality of opportunity is defined only by equality of result, and that identity politics determines the degree of government-mandated penance and reparations.

Sometimes individual voices of this far-growing resistance movement write credos aimed at the Google-mandated reeducation seminars.

Sometimes a few faculty members simply do not show up at their required university diversity-indoctrination workshops.

Sometimes, millions of viewers flip the channel when jocks at ESPN lecture as if they were wizened philosophers.

Sometimes when multimillionaire athletes claim victimhood and won’t stand for the national anthem, viewers of NFL games never view again.

And sometimes they vote for flawed candidates like Donald Trump, whose virtue of saying almost anything to anyone at any time is considered a sort of harsh medicine that targets the malady of identity-driven political correctness, a chemotherapy to stop metastasizing malignancy.

You’ll want to read the whole thing, even if it is on the hated National Review. Save your resistance for the really, really, bigly things.

Meanwhile, from deep in the Rabbit Hole

It’s been a bad summer for Hollywood, with box office results the worst in a quarter century. And Labor Day weekend - the unofficial end of the season - certainly did nothing to reverse the trend. I have a  helpful suggestion for the moguls of movies: forget the movies, focus on the popcorn. Much better profit margin anyway.

popcorn empty theatre seats

And if you’re looking for stock market advice I would recommend investing in popcorn stock; the Democrats are about to create performances that will require a great deal of popcorn consumption.

Clinton’s emails, which were stolen by the Russians, have never been found. But as I’ve mentioned numerous times, the messages are still in the possession of the National Security Agency (NSA), which offered to give them to the FBI.

Comey turned down that offer, according to a source who has been very reliable. - New York Post

Now why ever would the Director of the FBI turn down an offer to review Hillary’s deleted, depleted, totally unrelated to anything other than yoga and weddings emails, you ask? Because he had previously determined that he sure as hell wasn’t going to be the patsy that fingered a Clinton no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.

And who could blame him?

arkancide

And so we find ourselves once again deep in the rabbit hole where Hillary is held harmless and the rest of us feel like the mad hatter.

So grab some popcorn. You’re gonna need it.

Dewey Defeats Truman!

Poll: 73% of Dems Would Give Up Alcohol for Trump Impeachment

Number one, I don’t believe them but I guess we’re supposed to be impressed with their level of passion related to impeaching the President. Number two, if they had given up alcohol before the election they too may have realized that Donald Trump was America’s last Great White Hope. There, I said it, so just shoot me.

927233c5c36cdd0c0fc4f0af26a3bd0c--pro-trump-trump-wins hope

Number 3: this poll contains as much truth and accuracy as most of the current medical “research” that is conducted in labs and universities around the country to tell us how we should be living our lives. Which is to say that most epidemiological studies today are a far cry from real science; they rely on surveys that are not much better than those of pollsters. Think about how accurate your answers are when you fill out those stupid surveys every time you go to the doctor’s office asking how much you smoke(d)/drink/exercise. The same honesty and accuracy goes into the surveys “scientists” conduct to determine how much salt, sugar, fat, caffeine, fruits, vegetables, exercise, alcohol are good/bad for you.

Keep that in mind the next time you hear the advice of “experts” – it’s most likely based on (bad) survey data. If polls were accurate we’d all be living in the rabbit hole.

And DACA would be the least of our problems.

Labor Day: I Wonder What That Means Anymore

Richard FeynmanProfessor Richard Feynman

What does Labor Day celebrate?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday is “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.” Labor Day is a “yearly national tribute” to the “contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and wellbeing of our country.” – Newsweek

Odd, then, that Big Labor is opposed to Trump’s Make America Great Again agenda. On its face Trump’s platform would seem to promote positions Big Labor has traditionally supported. Such as:

  1. Restricting immigration to the legal channels where it can be controlled. Otherwise the market is flooded with cheap laborers that undermine the pay and benefits of Big Labor Union members.
  2. The re-negotiation of international trade agreements in order to make American-made products competitive with cheaply manufactured products from overseas. Remember when Progressives used to love the “even playing field?”
  3. Repealing Obamacare, a plan that – except for the companies who received temporary waivers – caused employers to cut benefits and/or full-time employees and increase out-of-pocket costs. A plan that if if not repealed before the “Cadillac Plan” tax kicks in next year will surely result in a cut to Big Labor’s hard won benefit rich healthcare plans.
  4. And since when has Labor been opposed to tax cuts?

I concede: I simply do not know how it can be that way.

Oh well, Labor Day, like everything else, really isn’t what it used to be. Now is simply a holiday to say farewell to summer.

labor-day-trips_1140x960

So I will take a  chairlift to the top of Park City, take a short hike, take in the splendor of the mountains at the first hint of fall…and wonder how it can be that way.

Liberals Have A Right To Remain Ignorant

Another bull's-eye from the pen of Donald Sensing: Let us mock Texans, their faith and their politics.

You'd think the Left would have learned from Politico's debacle of a few days ago when even fellow-travelers protests' compelled the site to take down this cartoon:

Mocking Texans Politico

Ed Morrisey explains,

In his usual sledgehammer style, he [the cartoonist] includes a Gadsden flag to slam conservatives, Confederate imagery to smear Texans as racists, and then also includes a gratuitous slap at people of faith. It’s a smug, arrogant, and utterly tone-deaf attack on hurricane refugees in the midst of their crisis, exploiting their tragedy to ride his hobby horses all over their pain.

In other words, any excuse will do to smack down people of Christian faith who do not cleave to the liberal line that Big Government is the same as the Hand of God. The Left sees everything in on-off, right-wrong terms. There is no nuance in their world view. A liberal colleague of mine, whom I have know for 20-plus years and who I count a a true friend, posted this similar cartoon on his FB page:

Mocking Texans DM

In his comments on the cartoon, my friend betrayed what you encounter on the Left over and over: "I'm pointing out that the stance that all government help is bad is ridiculous and bad... ." To which I replied, "I know, or know of, exactly zero people on my side of the aisle who say that 'all government help is bad.' That's a memetic straw man on the Left but it has no basis."
I wonder what the cartoonist or its enthralled would say if they knew that the quote in the first section, above, "That government is best which governs least," was penned by Henry David Thoreau (not Thomas Jefferson, as commonly attributed)

Read the whole thing, it reminded me of the “discussion” pointman_12  posted on yesterday’s thread, documenting his “discussion” with a Dan Glass, a moronic jargoneer of the Leftie pursuasion.  I commend pointman’s patience and pray that someday I too will learn to exhibit such intestinal fortitude. Mr. Sensing aptly sums up pointman’s “argument,” as well as nearly every other “discussion” we ever have with Leftists:

And that is the basic template of almost all Leftist politics. There is absolutely nothing that so defines Leftism as anger, of which this is only one example. Converse or correspond with anyone on the Left long enough and it becomes obvious that they are just plan mad, especially at people who do not agree that they just know better than you do. So their commentary is, “smug, predictable, dismissive,” says Morrisey, “with all of the subtlety, wit, and artistry of a sledgehammer.” You either agree with them altogether or you are painted as a racist, homophobic, neo-Nazi, fundamentalist Christian, white supremacist, misogynist child of darkness. Who hates the government except in hurricanes.

And since we’re less than 10 days away from the anniversary of 9/11 it doesn’t seem inappropriate to point out that Christians of Texas - that the Left loves to mock and demean - are not the ones looking to kill you and your progeny just because you don’t share their religious beliefs.
