“The Sun Is the Same In a Relative Way But You're Older”

Enough with the politicizing at the funeralizing. It’s worse than 3 days of rain (which it’s going to do in these parts) on a holiday weekend. I know there’s more scheduled for today but I’m going to take a pass. Instead I’ll be celebrating a musicality Sunday, with a slight nod towards the neon gods that have and will be laid to rest this past week.

My first selection, something I could use a bit more of:

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

Next, a musical quiz to honor the Queen of Soul’s hometown record label: it was originally conceived to accompany the Motown CD Dewey put together for Creeper’s FFF in Le Claire Iowa 2 years ago (?!) already. And now, thanks to Aretha’s passing, it’s relevant again so better late than never. Here’s the question:

Which recording artist/s listed on Dewey From Detroit’s Motown Mix, FFF2016 Collector’s Edition never, evah, record on the Motown label?

There are a couple of Democratic rules in play in order to keep things on the up and up:

  • No cheating - no looking up the answers on the Intertubes
  • You may phone a friend
  • You can cheat if you must

And finally, just for fun: I love this YouTube clip from Hip Hop fan “Joey Reacts” as he listens to Pink Floyd’s Time for, well, the first time: “It feels so good to hear this music, I don’t know why!” Allow me to venture a guess: because it’s music, not misogynist rapping.

Because the vast repertoire of modern music is so awful there seems to be a new sub-industry of videos consisting of nothing more than millennials’ reactions to listening to classics for the first time (Pink Floyd appears to be a favorite, for obvious reasons). I would think looking for a job would be a better use of their time, but that’s just me.

Ah well, enjoy what time you’ve got any way you wish.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say
