Marcus Rubius
I finally got a chance to watch Marco Rubio’s foreign policy speech in front of the Parthenon. It was far more impressive than Obama’s foreign policy speech at the Brandenburg Gate where he promised to reduce nuclear weapons with a goal of a nuclear free world, wage war against climate change as well as his commitment to close Guantanamo Bay (he did not).
Marco took a different tack, defending Western Civilization and nationalism, noting that a core trait of Western civilization was a "fierce and relentless ambition" and "a yearning for discovery, for adventure, risk and glory". He also critiqued modern decline: Western societies have grown soft, prioritizing safety, the avoidance of risk, and global bureaucracies over national identity. He noted that the West is at an"Inflection Point" and the choices made today will determine whether the West maintains its global leadership or resigns itself to a future of "atrophy and servitude and decline."
He called for an "unapologetic pursuit of national power", stronger defense capabilities and an end to mass migration. And he arrogantly called for a post-MAGA USA achieving rapid reindustrialization, technological dominance and an unapologetic pursuit of national interests. But he also invoked classical history and Greek philosophy to map out a modern geopolitical strategy and alliances with the rest of the Western world.
Much more inspirational than Obama’s mea culpa world tour telling all that would listen that "there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive."
In case you haven’t had a chance to watch the most Reaganesque speech since, well, Reagan, here it is. It’s glorious.
